Why use MDMA for the treatment of PTSD? Explore the current state of MDMA-assisted research with Michael Mithoefer, M.D., and Annie Mithoefer, B.S.N. Results of MAPS' Phase 2 clinical trials will be discussed along with the therapeautic method and basic principles of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. Attendees will learn the specific elements of preparatory sessions, MDMA-assisted sessions, integration sessions (a short video of a clinical research session will be shown), and therapist self care and training.


mithoefer Michael Mithoefer, M.D., and Annie Mithoefer, B.S.N.

Michael Mithoefer, M.D., is a psychiatrist in Charleston, SC, who for many years has specialized in treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with an emphasis on experiential methods of psychotherapy, and is now focusing primarily on MDMA clinical research. He is board certified in Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine and is a Grof certified Holotropic Breathwork Practitioner, a Certified Internal Family Systems Therapist and is trained in EMDR. He and his wife, Annie Mithoefer, completed the first clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in 2008 for people with treatment-resistant PTSD. In 2016 they completed a similar study in military veterans, firefighters, and police officers with PTSD. They are currently conducting further MAPS-sponsored MDMA trials and MAPS trainings for therapists who will work in Phase 3 clinical trials and other MDMA research in the US and other countries. Michael is Lead Clinical Investigator and Medical Monitor, MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for PTSD, at MAPS Public Benefit Corporation.

Annie Mithoefer, B.S.N., is a psychiatric nurse in Charleston, SC who has many years experience working with individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using experiential psychotherapies. She is a Grof certified Holotropic Breathwork Practitioner and is trained in Hakomi Therapy. She and her husband, Michael Mithoefer, completed the first clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in 2008 for people with treatment-resistant PTSD. In 2016 they completed a similar study in military veterans, firefighters and police officers with PTSD. They are currently conducting further MAPS-sponsored MDMA trials and MAPS trainings for therapists who will work in Phase 3 clinical trials and other MDMA research in the US and other countries.
